Winter is coming, so I thought it might be a good idea to go and see the "Rheinfall" - a waterfall at the Swiss - German border at the city of Schaffhausen.
Why is winter a good time to go? Well, it's not. But hear me out.
The "Rheinfall" is Switzerland's most famous fall, located near the Swiss/German border and the city of Schaffhausen. Its a part of the "Grand Tour" sightseeing trail that runs through the whole country.
Normally people come here during late spring to summer and fall. In winter, there is less water as much of the water flowing down is actually melted glacier-ice water.
Here we can see the fall with this rocky formation in the middle. Its getting washed away slowly, but for now we can still enjoy and even climb on it.
In order to climb on that rock you need to take a boat ride.
The boat will take you from the shoreline to this rock. In springtime when there is much water flowing down the falls, this boat ride can be quite
spectacular.
And also a bit wet - you may not want to wear your latest high heels and Karl Lagerfeld shirt maybe ;-).
Once you are on this rock you can take the walk up to where we can see the flagpole in the picture.
There may be a lot of people and you may have to queue a bit to go up.
But it's well worth the effort as you will have an amazing view from there.
For those who prefer not go on that boat trip - there is another nice way to experience the falls.
You simply walk down the path from the entrance and continue on.
You will come to a series of point of views where you'll have a great view as well. There are some tunnels and "balconies" from where you see the fall real close.
This is where my wife was a bit afraid as it's quite loud and you can feel the power of the water running down the falls.
And that was in winter, when there is less water flowing down... That's why in my case it was a good idea to go in winter.
But for best viewing experience and weather conditions, I strongly recommend April - June.
Also, there is a restaurant where you can take a little snack.
If you are in this area, a visit of the town "Schaffhausen" might complement the day very well. It's very nearby and offers quite a nice experience as well.
